Victoria Park

Tried to escape Burnley's Mansfield friendly by visiting the other Victoria Park (not Dingwall) yesterday. Games was off, so I still had to watch the second half capitulation.

Post Match Thoughts

We will not collect enough points to stay in this division trying not to lose. Change approach, or change coach.

West Ham United 3 Burnley 2

Images and brief thoughts from the London Stafium where Burnley managed to throw away a game they were well in control of.

Burnley actually started the game well, controlling the first half of the game. Zian Flemming almost getting on the end of a screaming pass from Hartman, before deservedly heading Burnley ahead in the 36th.

West Ham always looked like they could threaten on the break, and were level just before half time - a fortunate deflection in a goalmouth scramble presenting Callum Wilson with a simple tap-in.

Despite Burnley dominating possession for the next half an hour, there was very little threat save for a Flemming header that went narrowly over. That was punished when West Ham went ahead in the 76th minute, Soucek capitalising on a Dubravka mistake.

West Ham doubled their advantage 8 minutes later, Kyle Walker-Peters tapping in a parried save from Soucek that he could not miss.

The late consolation from Josh Cullen with practically the last kick of the ball was scant consolation. If we are going to try to sit back and defend every lead we get in this league, then there will be more results like this.

I’m not frustrated by the result, I’m frustrated by the manner of it, and by 90 minutes of awful football, awful gamesmanship, and awful refereeing rewarding it.

Given that Vickie has been in Portugal for the week, and I cannot watch Burnley's output on, ugh, X, ugh - I'm sure she will be looking forward to tonight's feature length viewing!

Manchester United 3 Burnley 2

Concluding my evening website catch up with quick thoughts and images from Burnley's 3-2 defeat away to Manchester United.

After an evening of awful league cup football against Derby County in midweek, Burnley returned to action against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Manchester United dominated the early exchanges, but found Martin Dubravka in fine form, but there was nothing that he could do to prevent the rebound off Josh Cullen's back going over the line. Not sure that either linesman or referee gave the goal on the pitch, but the automated ball sensor identified that the ball had crossed the line.

Lyle Foster equalised late on in the first half. I thought that it was off side from where I was sat, but having seen the stills now I'm really unsure which bit of Foster was actually offside - because it was incredibly marginal.

The second half was completely the opposite, Burnley taking the game to United rather than absorbing. Foster would get his equaliser in the 55th minute, turning a Bruun-Larsen cross past Bayindir in the United goal.

Frustratingly we switched off at the restart and United were immediately back ahead, having had hardly a look in since half time. Dalot finding Mbuemo alone in the box to fire in from short range.

Anthony would pounce on a rebounding Tchouma shot in the 68th minute to equalise for a second time, and this time it looked like the game was well under control and destined for a decent draw, that would probably have fairly reflected the balance of play for both sides.

The Diallo fell into the penalty area after the slightest of contact with Jaidon Anthony. I have no idea how VAR cooked up a penalty from that exchange, but I think it is fairly safe to say that it would not have been given in the other box. A proper big club decision. Bruno Fernandes fired home the winner from the resulting penalty in the 95th minute to secure three points United barely deserved.

Back at Turf Moor for a Tuesday evening League Cup tie with Derby County.

Burnley 2 Derby County 1

Thoughts and images from Burnley's 2-1 victory over Derby County at Turf Moor in the League Cup.

Having failed to score in 180 minutes of football against Derby last season, it took Aaron Ramsey less than 4 minutes to put Burnley ahead in a game that looked of little importance to either side. It felt much more like a pre-season friendly in front of a crowd of just 7,019 for our first home cup tie in three years. The repetitive routines ramped up the friendly vibe - the Zian Flemming long throw being a case in point.

Clark equalised for Derby in the 35th minute, with neither side looking particularly interested in scoring for the remainder of the game. Just as it seemed that penalties were looming substitute Oliver Sonne popped up on the end of a magic Mike Tresor through ball to put us all out of our misery infant of the now functioning floodlights.

Burnley 2 Sunderland 0

Belated notes and photographs from Burnley's convincing 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Turf Moor on 23 August, with a few thoughts on the ground and menu improvements.

This wa say first visit to Turf Moor since the ground reconfiguration, with away supporters switched to the North end of the Cricket Field Stand, with exclusive use of the ginnel running past the cricket club from Belvedere Road. From my perspective this elongates my walk into the ground considerably, as I now need to walk around the entire ground to get to my turnstile which is next to where visiting supporters now queue in to the Cricket Field. I don't mind too much though, pretty much means I'll pick up a Starbucks on the way in rather than buy awful coffee in the ground.

After the 541 dalliance with wing backs at Tottenham, Parker reverted to 451 this time out - with Sonne dropping to the bench and Lesley Ugochukwu replacing Josh Laurent in CM. Scott Parker wore a suit again, which did not bode well given what happened the last time he did not where his captain stripes cardigan..

There was also the strange appearance of mashed potato, gravy and peas on menu to report on. Love it, but seriously weird - suspect these are supposed to be ordered with the new Haffners pies, though I'd forgotten that Clayton Park were for the dust.

There was a celebration for the late great Willlie Irvine ahead of kick-off, with a minute's applause before the whistle.

The game had the same pattern as the two meetings between the sides last season, with Sunderland looking to use pace and physicality to bully on the counter, but to less effect. Hannibal also managed to avoid stamping on anybody's testicles today.

Burnley looked to have scored first. Lyle Foster, so ineffective for large parts of last season, stealing the ball in the 19th, and putting it into the top right corner in front of the cricket field. The goal was disallowed for a push in the build-up.

Jaidon Anthony had a good opportunity to put Burnley ahead in the last minute of the first half. Hannibal played a sweet ball over to left post from open play, but Anthony could only head narrowly wide.

Burnley moved ahead immediately at the start of the second half. Josh Cullen picked up a flick across to left of D, sliding it inside right post. Despite another VAR check the goal stood. 1-0.

Then the lights went out for Sunderland. Not on the pitch, the actual lights, every attempt to get concourse and floodlighting on concurrently failed. Eventually play continued without, viewers around the world having to put up with a slightly dimmer view.

Jaidon Anthony scored the second in the 87th minute, running in behind after period of pressure, rounding keeping and slotting the ball back across into roof of net to remove any significant jeopardy from the game.

I thought this was an excellent performance against a side that we really struggled against last season, that has invested heavily, and that started the season well - for me we looked on a different level, with the result well deserved.

Tottenham Hotspur 3 Burnley 0

Burnley were well defeated 3-0 by Tottenham in the season opener at Spurs. Read on for my thoughts on the game.

Let’s put this one to bed early. I need to get in the habit of writing up my notes on the way back from football. I don’t want my site to be largely about football, though it has headed that way, so I need to free up more time for other stuff.

Burnley set up with the same 541 formation that they tested in a friendly against Lazio just a week earlier.

Dubravka made his first start in goal. Walker, Ekdal and Esteve in central defence, with Sonne and Hartman at wing backs. Cullen and Laurent anchored central midfield, with Anthony and Hannibal outside, and Foster upfront.

Burnley started nervously, struggling to adjust to the pace of Premier League football. Tottenham looked dangerous in possession, and went ahead in the 10th minute when Richarlison at the back post got on the end of a cross that Cullen was unable to present.

Burnley came into the game after this, looking the better team for much of the remainder of the half - but could not turn that pressure into an equaliser.

The start to the second half was very similar to the first, with Tottenham looking dangerous and likely to score. It was Burnley that should have scored next though, the ball being lifted from Hannibal’s left foot just as he was poised to place it beyond Vicario to the right.

Spurs doubled their lead just a minute later. Richardson found himself again at the far post on a cross from the right, putting a sublime low scissor kick past Dubravka on the volley.

Scott Parker made a couple of changes in the aftermath, with Lesley Ugochukwu coming on in the 62nd for Laurent and Jacob Bruun Larson for Hannibal.

It was only a few minutes though before Tottenham sealed the points, Brennan Johnson running in behind onto a ball from the halfway line to slot home.

Further changes followed in the 73rd with Fleming replacing Foster, and Lou’s Tchouma replacing Sonne for his debut.

Edwards replaced Anthony in the 85th for his Premier League debut, looking threatening in his few involvements in play.

It was not all bad - but if Burnley cannot be more clinical with the chances we create, and responsive to turnover in play, it will be a long season. Laurent and Foster look out of depth at this level in particular.

There were plenty of typical Burnley refereeing decisions, including the first corner to be granted for not playing out within 8 seconds. It looked ridiculous. None of these really influenced the game though.

Ekdal had a decent game in central defence, as did Josh Cullen in the centre. I thought Anthony had good moments but lacked end product. Hannibal was our player of the match for me though, and I was surprised to see him come off.

Until next time, up the clarets!
