Privacy

This website does not collect data about it's users, you need not worry about being recommended claret and blue clothing for the next fortnight because you have viewed an article on site.

Having said that, there are probably a few important points:

Analytics

I regularly change my mind on this and go through spells where I either do, or do not, montior analytics on my site. I'm currently participating in Neatnik's Neatstats beta. Neatstats collects only non-identifying information about visits to the site, and talk about their approach to privacy here.

Third party trackers

Though I try to trap and replace them, I seem to keep reintroducing third party embeds on this site as I keep rebuilding it. As a result you are likely to find embedded iframes from Youtube, Loom and Strava.

Youtube videos are always embeded using the nocookie urls, though I'd not trust Google not to do evil things with my data regardless. There are only a few Loom videos which use some functional cookies to allow users to 'like' videos that they watch. In both cases I will look to move the videos onto Bunny, though I believe that too utilises a cookie in its video functionality.

I don't think I need the Strava embeds, and unless you are interested in training posts from 2013 you are very unlikely to stumble across one. That said, my long term plan has always been to upload GPX files onto my website and to render the map, elevation, and workout metrics data directly on this site. Once that happens the only person being tracked by anybody on this site will be me!

Webmentions and Comments

If you comment on any of the posts or pages on this site, those comments will be displayed on that post or page via my PureComments installation. The only information kept is:

  • Your name
  • Your email (optional and stored encrypted)
  • Your website URL (optional)
  • Your comment

Your email is never published. It’s only used privately to send you a notification if someone replies. It's also encrypted in the database; the plaintext email is only reconstructed transiently for the admin UI or outbound mail. It is never exposed via the public API.

Your website URL is public. If you provide one, your name in the comment will link to your site.

Participating enthusiatically on the indieWeb, this website will display Webmentions received by my webmention endpoint at webmention.io. Many of these webmentions will have been sent on to webmention.io from my bluesky or social.lol mastodon profiles by brid.gy. The webmention profile will link back to the source of the webmention, or your user profile, displaying any avatar that you have made available there.

In either case if there is a comment, reaction, or other webmention of yours displaying on this site that you would rather not be, please email me preferrably using the reply by email button at the bottom of the post with details - and I will happily remove it, no questions asked.
