Burnley 1 Nottingham Forest 2

Images from Turf Moor, as Burnley lost at home to Nottingham Forest in the final game of the 2023-4 season.

I'm not going to write much about this game. Probably that I'm putting my notes up a week afterwards shows my general antipathy, but as the entire coaching team has departed in that week, there's very little point talking about tactical failings.

The game was inconsequential - defeat at Tottenham the week prior condemned Burnley to the Championship next season, and all but secured Forest's status.

Like many of the games against the weaker teams this season, Burnley managed to dominate possession (72%!), give away two easy goals to the opposition, and went through the motions to even get back into the game.

Naturally, both of the goals would be scored by Chris Wood, who left Burnley in the midst of our last relegation campaign, to sit on the bench at Newcastle.

The game was also notable for the departure of the last of the dychensian legends, with Jack Cork and Johann Berg Gudmundsson both departing the club, and Jay Rodriguez and Charlie Taylor considering contract extensions offered.

There was a ridiculous huddle where Vincent Kompany apparently told the team that next year 'we' win on this pitch. I expect his Bayern tenure to be dogshit (I've learned some Burnley speak this season, which was also dogshit). I'm just really relieved somebody has been stupid enough to take him off our hands, rather than having to buy out his very expensive and very long contract when needing to relieve him of his duties in the autumn.

I'll be back at some point shortly with my thoughts on the season as a whole.
